neurodivergent learners

There is something special about the beginning of a new school year. Classrooms are full of curiosity, hallways buzz with energy, and students reconnect with friends, meet their teachers, and settle into new routines.

At Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School, back to school is about more than returning to the classroom. It is an opportunity to create an environment where neurodivergent students feel understood, supported and genuinely excited to learn.

Why Inclusive Education Matters

Every student learns differently. Neurodivergent students bring their own strengths, perspectives, interests and ways of thinking to the classroom, and they thrive when their learning environment recognizes and supports those differences.

Inclusive education begins with understanding that students should not have to fit into a single definition of what learning is supposed to look like. Instead, schools must create flexible, responsive environments where students can access the tools, strategies, and support they need to succeed.

At KGMS, our specialized approach combines small class sizes, individualized instruction and support for students’ academic, social and emotional development. We take the time to understand each student as a whole person, including their strengths, challenges, interests and goals.

When students feel safe, accepted and understood, they are better able to take risks, advocate for themselves, build meaningful relationships and recognize what they are capable of achieving.

Building Confidence and Connection

For many neurodivergent students, the transition into a new school year can bring a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. New classrooms, teachers, expectations and routines can take time to navigate.

That is why connection is at the heart of the KGMS experience. Our educators work intentionally to build trusting relationships, establish supportive routines and create classrooms where students feel a strong sense of belonging.

Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, build independence and celebrate their progress. Success will look different for every learner—and every step forward is worth recognizing.

Looking Ahead to an Exciting Year

We are incredibly excited for the year ahead and all the learning, growth and connection it will bring. We look forward to seeing our students discover new strengths, deepen friendships, take on challenges and become more confident in who they are as learners and individuals.

We are also excited to welcome prospective families to KGMS during our upcoming Open Houses:

  • Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 10 am to 12 pm
  • Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 10 am to 12 pm
  • Saturday, January 30, 2027 from 10 am to 12 pm

Our Open Houses are an opportunity to tour our North Vancouver campus, learn about our specialized Grades 1–12 program, meet members of our team and discover how KGMS supports students with learning differences.

If you are looking for a school where your child can feel understood, supported and empowered to thrive, we invite you to join us at an upcoming Open House or book a private tour.

Here’s to a school year filled with learning, confidence, connection and growth. We are so glad to be back together!
