Junior (K-6)

Core Program

The Ministry of Education prescribed curriculum is addressed in all instructional areas from Grades K-6.

In our Junior School Program all classes have two homeroom-based teachers across core academic areas, a third curriculum specific resource teacher supports lessons in numeracy and literacy. Instructors utilize multiple modalities such as sight, sound, touch and movement to help students connect language with letters and words.

With one of the lowest student-teacher ratios in the Province, we are uniquely positioned to adapt our programs to meet the needs of individual learners.

Our well supported academic program allows us to build a strong foundation for all students, helping them develop key skills that will build confidence and drive success in future years.

Daily One-on-One Tutoring

With a foundation based in Orton-Gillingham methodology, tutors provide support and instruction not only in targeted language arts instruction, but may also draw upon their experiences in mentorship, Social-Emotional Learning, Social Thinking, Executive Functioning, Guided Play and motivation and engagement.

Tutors deliver each session in a technology rich environment that utilizes adaptive technologies, allowing them to tailor their instruction to meet individual needs. Tutors also work with specialists including Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, or Developmental Specialists to inform their instruction.

Everyone learns at their own pace. At KGMS, frequent review and practice helps students build the confidence they need to take on challenges and reach new heights.

What is Orton-Gillingham tutoring?

Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutoring is a multi-sensory instructional approach commonly used in one-on-one or small group settings for individuals facing difficulties with reading, spelling and writing.

The method engages learners through visual, auditory and kinesthetic lessons designed specifically for the learning style of the individual. Delivery is paced to the needs of each student, taking them step-by-step from basic concepts that progress to more complex language functions.

At KGMS, the multi-sensory approach of OG is incorporated throughout all instructional approaches.

Fine Arts & P.E.

Through art, music and other co-curricular activities students are encouraged to explore their creativity. We are also advocates for physical activity. In addition to P.E. class, students have the opportunity to participate in intramurals, coach mentorship, and in-house tournaments.
